Kyle Tata is from Baltimore,MD and is currently based in Los Angeles, CA. He primarily works in photography, artist books, and video. He is interested in moments where the slippage between the illusionism and objectness of photography occurs. In combining multiple alternative and unique photographic processes he creates a dialogue between the history of photography and image production itself. He is a BFA graduate from Maryland Institute College of Art and has been featured at galleries and institutions such as the Walters Art Museum (Baltimore,MD, 2014 & 2017), Hamiltonian Gallery (Washington, DC 2017), The International Print Center (New York, NY 2013), Spudnik Press & Gallery (Chicago, IL, 2014), and the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery (Los Angeles, CA, 2020).
This most recent series revolves around the archive of a Hollywood production studio run by the United States Military that operated from the late 1940s to the mid 1960s. Sourcing images directly from this archive Tata creates a speculative meditation on image making and compares the process of analogue photography to scientific laboratories.
